Coddingtown Mall

Coddingtown Mall is one of two enclosed shopping malls in Santa Rosa, California. Opened in 1962, the mall is anchored by J. C. Penney, Macy's, Old Navy, and Whole Foods Market. It is owned by Codding Enterprises and Simon Property Group, the latter of which also owns Santa Rosa Plaza.
==History==
Hugh Codding built Coddingtown Mall in 1962. Originally an open-air mall, it was enclosed in 1979.〔http://www.northbaybiz.com/General_Articles/General_Articles/Whats_in_Store.php〕 The expansion also added Liberty House, which was converted to Macy's in 1984. In 1996, Macy's moved to a spot previously occupied by The Emporium. As a result, Gottschalks moved into the former Liberty House/Macy's building.〔http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=SA&p_theme=sa&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=0EAFED85DFBB5A5D&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM〕〔http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=SA&p_theme=sa&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=0EAFED184E90F59D&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM〕 In 1997 the mall was immortalized in the Primus song "Coddingtown" off the Brown Album, as a place in which you "can get it all down there
from tennis balls to glue". Codding sold a 50% share of the mall to Simon Property Group in 2005. After the sale to Simon, many merchants criticized Simon for failing to bring chain stores to the mall.〔http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20090108/NEWS/901080222?p=2&tc=pg〕 A Ralphs supermarket in the mall was demolished in 2008 for a Whole Foods Market,〔http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives?p_product=SA&p_theme=sa&p_action=search&p_maxdocs=200&p_topdoc=1&p_text_direct-0=11FD2959C4576B70&p_field_direct-0=document_id&p_perpage=10&p_sort=YMD_date:D&s_trackval=GooglePM〕 whose opening was ultimately delayed until 2010,〔http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20100627/BUSINESS/100629613〕 and Gottschalks closed in 2009.〔http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20090108/NEWS/901080222?p=3&tc=pg〕
In November 2012, the former Gottschalks building was demolished to make way for a Target store.〔http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20121115/ARTICLES/121119715〕
